Los estudios sobre el escritor y naturalista prusiano Alexander von Humboldt y las ediciones de su obra son abundantes. Entre los múltiples capítulos destacados de su famoso viaje por los trópicos americanos destacan las dos visitas a Cuba (1800–1801/1804) como un caso particular. Hasta el día son muy escasos los documentos originales que se conocen acerca de estas visitas, las fuentes coloniales que lo informaron y la historia de su recepción. Esto se debe, en gran parte, a que las fuentes documentales son de difícil acceso. Para salvar este obstáculo nació en 2019 el Proyecto Humboldt Digital (ProHD), una iniciativa de cooperación llevada a cabo entre La Habana y Berlín, que tiene por objetivo principal editar una colección de textos relacionados con la estancia de Humboldt en Cuba. En este artículo explicamos cómo se han creado las ediciones digitales académicas desde un punto de vista metodológico. Tras presentar los orígenes del proyecto, se expone el flujo de trabajo ideado entre la Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana y la Academia de Ciencias y Humanidades de Berlín-Brandeburgo a fin de digitalizar, describir, publicar, editar y preservar en formato digital una colección de textos previamente seleccionados. Asimismo, se describe el modelo de representación de datos en formato TEI y se justifica de manera crítica el uso de las herramientas empleadas para codificar y publicar las ediciones. Por último, se analizan los primeros resultados editoriales obtenidos y se reflexiona en las conclusiones sobre los principales desafíos afrontados.
Studies on the Prussian writer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and editions of his work are abundant. Among the many outstanding chapters of his famous journey through the American tropics, the two visits to Cuba (1800–1801/1804) stand out as a particular case. To this day very few original documents are known about his actual visits, the colonial sources that informed him and the history of his reception. This is due, in large part, to the fact that documentary sources are difficult to access. To overcome this difficulty, the Project Humboldt Digital was born in 2019, a cooperation project carried out between Havana and Berlin, whose main objective is to publish a collection of texts related to Humboldt’s stay in Cuba. In this article we aim to explain how our digital scholarly editions have been created from a methodological point of view. After outlining the origins, we present the workflow developed between the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de La Habana and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities to digitize, describe, publish, edit and preserve in digital format a collection of previously selected texts. Also, we describe the model of data representation in TEI format, as well as the tools employed to encode and publish the editions. Finally, we analyze the first editorial results obtained and offer some conclusions on the main challenges faced.

En este artículo se presenta un proyecto de edición digital de una serie de fragmentos del poema castellano conocido como Libro de Alexandre. En primer lugar, se expondrán las razones de la propuesta editorial, que no tiene por objeto la creación de un nuevo texto crítico ni la publicación de la obra completa, sino de un recorte de fragmentos relacionados con el tema de mi investigación doctoral. En cambio, se propone presentar el corpus de fragmentos de écfrasis en el poema enriquecidos con una capa de información semántica que permita integrar en la edición digital los resultados de la investigación filológica. En una segunda instancia se describe la propuesta de marcado XML-TEI adoptada para la codificación del texto y se expone una metodología de publicación digital con minimal computing que fue utilizada para crear un sitio estático a modo de versión de prueba para la visualización de los textos codificados. Además de la presentación de este proyecto de edición digital concreto, este artículo aspira a ofrecer una reflexión sobre la necesidad de promover el desarrollo y uso de software abierto en los proyectos de Humanidades Digitales, especialmente para aquellos que se desarrollan en el Sur Global.
In this article I present a digital edition project of a series of fragments of the Castilian poem known as Libro de Alexandre. Firstly, I explain the reasons for the editorial proposal, which does not have as goal the publishing of a new complete critical text, but a selection of fragments related to the topic of my doctoral research, the use of the ekphrasis in the poem. Secondly, I describe the process of semantic enrichment of the text, the XML-TEI encoding, and the minimal computing approach. Furthermore, this article aims to offer a reflection on the need to promote the use of open software in Digital Scholarly Edition projects, especially those that take place in the Global South.

En ciertas circunstancias, los datos preparados por proyectos no pueden ser publicados de manera abierta. En las últimas décadas diferentes proyectos han publicado datos derivados para evitar este problema. En este artículo, argumentamos a favor de TEI como formato para esta tarea, ya que favorece el cumplimiento de los principios FAIR. Además, presentamos diferentes opciones, discutiendo sus ventajas y desventajas y mostramos aplicaciones concretas a varios proyectos con textos en español (CORDE, novelas de la Edad de Plata y textos de Picasso).
In certain circumstances, data prepared by projects cannot be published openly. In the last decades different projects have published derived data (also called extracted features) to avoid this problem. In this article, we argue in favor of TEI as a format for this task, as it favors compliance with the FAIR principles. Furthermore, we present different options, discuss their advantages and disadvantages and show concrete applications to several projects with Spanish texts (CORDE, novels of the Silver Age and texts by Picasso).

Este artículo analiza diferentes proyectos de edición digital de cartas en español que utilizan el marcado TEI, mostrando sus particularidades con respecto a otros proyectos epistolares del ámbito internacional. Se describen distintas prácticas tanto en el modelado de metadatos como de anotaciones en el texto y se valora su interés a la hora de extraer el máximo rendimiento de las posibilidades que ofrecen las humanidades digitales hoy para el conocimiento de los textos epistolares en sus múltiples dimensiones y, en particular, para la explotación de su estructura reticular.
This paper analyzes different projects for the digital edition of letters in Spanish that use TEI markup, showing their specificity regarding other epistolary projects at global scale. I describe different practices, both in the metadata modeling and textual annotations. I evaluate how these methodologies, anchored in the disciplines of the digital humanities, contribute to the knowledge of epistolary texts in their multiple dimensions, in particular their reticular structure.

Este artículo expone que el trabajo de edición digital abre un espacio para la colaboración y la experimentación que puede ser provechoso en el contexto de la enseñanza del español y de las letras y culturas hispánicas. Considera la edición digital como una forma de enfrentar, en parte, los retos que los programas de idiomas experimentan actualmente en la academia estadounidense, analiza las ventajas que la edición digital les ofrece a los estudiantes, y esboza unas formas de incorporar proyectos editoriales en varias situaciones docentes. Al reflexionar sobre sus experiencias en la University of North Florida, los autores procuran sugerir algunos puntos de partida para otros que quieran explorar las posibilidades pedagógicas de la transmisión digital de los textos hispánicos.
This article proposes that the processes involved in digital editing create a space for collaboration and experimentation that can be useful in the context of teaching Spanish and Hispanic letters and cultures. It considers digital editing as a way to partly address the challenges that language programs are experiencing in the U.S. academy, discusses the advantages that digital editing offers students, and outlines ways to incorporate editorial projects into various teaching situations. Reflecting on their experiences at the University of North Florida, the authors seek to suggest some starting points for others who seek to explore the pedagogical possibilities of the digital transmission of Hispanic texts.

Los objetivos principales del análisis de esta encuesta son entender quien forma parte de la comunidad de usuarios de TEI en el mundo hispanohablante o en iniciativas relacionadas con textos en español, qué tipo de formación académica relacionada con la TEI se ofrece hoy en día, cómo y con qué finalidades se usa este tipo de codificación de textos y cuáles son los recursos existentes para su enseñanza y aprendizaje.
In this article we analyze the results obtained in a survey on the use of the Text Encoding Initiative for Digital Humanities projects in Spanish that was conducted in early 2022 within the project “Communicating the Text Encoding Initiative to a Multilingual User Community” funded by the A. Mellon Foundation. The main objectives of our analysis are to understand who conforms the TEI user community in the Spanish-speaking world or in Spanish text-related initiatives, what types of TEI-related academic training is offered today, how and for what purposes this type of text encoding is used, and what are the existing resources for teaching and learning.

This article describes a proposal for elements of ruby glossing that was incorporated into the TEI Guidelines release 4.2.0, which was codenamed “Ruby.” The Japanese writing system is one of the most complex writing systems in the world, mixing three scripts. The system can also be described as complex in terms of text linearity: the ruby gloss, originally developed from vernacular glosses to Classical Chinese texts, is now a device for presenting a parallel text alongside the main text. Ruby, or rubi, or furigana, can be used to give clues about phonation as well as to present another reading of the text, which sometimes can be an essential part of the text. Such a textual structure requires another layer of semantics besides the existing set of vocabulary, such as , (or ) and . Ruby glosses can also be double-sided. This note discusses the encoding of examples attested in real texts using proposed elements (, , and ), and also considers Taiwanese bopomofo, a related gloss form.

This paper introduces an integrative and comprehensive method for the linguistic annotation of parliamentary discourse. Initially conceived as documentation for a specific and small-scale research project, the annotation scheme takes into account national specificities and is geared to proposing an annotation scheme that is both highly standardized and adaptable to other research contexts. In this paper we present a specific application of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) framework applied to a subset of official transcripts of plenary proceedings in three parliamentary cultures. The TEI annotation scheme proposed here has two main applications: first, it serves as a basis for encoding parliamentary corpora by providing a systematic way of annotating both elements within the text (e.g., turns, incidents, and interruptions) and the metadata associated with it (e.g., variables pertaining to the speaker or the speech event); second, it provides a cross-linguistic empirical basis for further annotation projects.

The Inscriptions of Israel/Palestine project is an online corpus of over four thousand inscriptions from Israel and Palestine, written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Aramaic, dating roughly from the Persian Period to the Arab Conquest. The source files with inscription text and metadata are encoded using EpiDoc, a TEI customization widely used by epigraphers. As the project prepared to deposit its XML files in an institutional repository, it transformed them into a locally developed robust archival format. This paper evaluates these decisions against the FAIR metrics, using IIP as a test case. This allows us to suggest improvements for our own archival encoding as well as to see where EpiDoc and TEI enhance FAIRness and where they could provide more support. Finally, we suggest some ways to use FAIR metrics that are more amenable to TEI documents and corpora.

Maya hieroglyphic script (300 BCE–1500 CE) is a semi-deciphered logographic and syllabic autochthonous writing system from the Americas and is one of the most significant writing traditions of the ancient world. Because of its incomplete state of decipherment, complexity and variation in graphematics, and partially lost lexicon, transliterations cannot be used within the encoding. The project Text Database and Dictionary of Classic Mayan approaches this challenge with an encoding strategy relying on stand-off markup, which is enriched with additional information sources. Using different formats (RDF, XML) and standards (CIDOC CRM, TEI P5), the inscriptions are encoded in a multilevel corpus: (1) a tei_all-compliant schema defining values and rules for the encoding of the text’s topological and structural features, (2) a “Sign Catalogue” for the classification of Maya hieroglyphs, and (3) the tool ALMAH (Annotator for the Linguistic analysis of MAya Hieroglyphs) for linguistic analyses. In this paper, we focus on the TEI schema and highlight our strategy for encoding hieroglyphs without using linguistic transliterations and transcriptions.

Any expansion of the TEI beyond its traditional user base involves a recognition that there are many differing answers to the traditional question “What is text, really?” We report on some work carried out in the context of the COST Action Distant Reading for European Literary History (CA16204), in particular on the TEI-conformant schemas developed for one of its principal deliverables: the European Literary Text Collection (ELTeC). The ELTeC will contain comparable corpora for each of at least a dozen European languages, each being a balanced sample of one hundred novels from the period 1840 to 1920, together with metadata concerning their production and reception. We hope that it will become a reliable basis for comparative work in data-driven textual analytics. The focus of the ELTeC encoding scheme is not to represent texts in all their original complexity, nor to duplicate the work of scholarly editors. Instead, we aim to facilitate a richer and better-informed distant reading than a transcription of lexical content alone would permit. At the same time, where the TEI encourages diversity, we enforce consistency by permitting representation of only a specific and quite small set of textual features, both structural and analytical. These constraints are expressed by a master TEI ODD, from which we derive three different schemas by ODD chaining, each associated with appropriate documentation.

The underlying uncertainty in digital humanities research data affects decision-making and persists during a project’s lifecycle. This uncertainty is inevitable since most empirical claims cannot be assessed against an absolute truth (Drucker 2011; Binder et al. 2014). This situation has been previously recognized together with the need to report the degrees of uncertainty that accompany such claims (Blau 2011). Although TEI makes it possible to annotate text with notions of certainty or precision, examples of actual projects taking advantage of this are scarce. There are many possible explanations for uncertainty’s lack of visibility in computationally supported humanities research; among them, the need for tools specifically designed to address the goal of defining and managing uncertainty stands out. Thus, efforts to provide technical support for humanities research should focus on managing and making uncertainty more transparent, rather than removing it. Another challenge is the fact that there is no agreement on a generic taxonomy for the different types of uncertainty that researchers may face. Various researchers across disciplines, working on varying projects and data sets, can use different categories to classify the uncertainties present in a particular case. In this paper, we introduce a collaborative platform for collective annotation of TEI data sets. We briefly present the flexible taxonomy of uncertainty used in the platform and describe two data sets used for its testing. Then we describe use cases of annotations available on the platform, and how they translate into TEI annotations. Creating and interpreting annotations with and without uncertainty should now be easier, especially for researchers who do not know TEI markup.

Digitally managing punctuation in the editions of medieval manuscripts is one of those issues that initially looks like a minor detail, but later reveals itself as a tangled web of problems spanning from computer science (how to represent punctuation signs?) to philology (what types of signs exist?) through epistemology (is the processing of punctuation a mere technical transformation or a valuable part of the scholarship?). The aim of this paper is to address the theoretical aspects of these questions and their practical implications, providing a couple of solutions fitting the paradigms and the technologies of the TEI. This paper describes how we dealt with the encoding and transformation of the punctuation in the Early New High German edition of Marco Polo’s travel account. Technically, we implemented a set of general rules (as XSLT templates) plus various exceptions (as descriptive instructions in XML attributes), and applied them in an automated fashion (using XProc pipelines). In addition to this, we discuss the philological foundation of this method and, contextually, we address the topic of the transformation of a single original source into different transcriptions: from a highly diplomatic edition to an interpretative one, going through a spectrum of intermediate levels of normalization. We also reflect on the separation between transcription and analysis, as well as on the role of the editor when the edition is the output of a semi-automated process.

Both relational databases (RDBs) and XML have strengths and weaknesses as data storage and modeling systems. Most researchers working with historical and literary data in the humanities would argue for the superiority of XML, since it allows unlimited nesting, linking, and complexity. Relational database proponents claim superior querying and processing speed, although recent advances in XML languages and tools have eroded that advantage. Nevertheless, RDBs remain popular and are widely used, particularly in the early stages of projects where resources and metadata are being collected, and projects may end up with both an RDB and an XML document collection. Programmers must then integrate these distinct forms of data when building project outputs. This article discusses the Digital Victorian Periodical Poetry (DVPP) project, where metadata on about 15,000 poems from nineteenth-century periodicals is captured in a MySQL database, and periodically exported to create a TEI file for each poem. Many of the poems are then transcribed and encoded. The canonical source of metadata is the RDB, while the canonical source of textual data is the TEI file. Metadata in the TEI files must be periodically updated from the RDB, without disturbing the textual encoding. Changes to the RDB data may result in changes to the id and filename of the related TEI file, so any existing TEI data is migrated to a new file, and the Subversion repository must be appropriately updated. All of this is done with XSLT and Ant.

The TEI Guidelines are developed and curated by a community whose main purpose is to standardize the encoding of primary sources relevant for humanities research and teaching. But other communities are also working with TEI-based publication formats. The first goal of this paper is to raise awareness of the importance of TEI-based scholarly publishing as we know it today. The second goal is to contribute to a reflection on the development of a TEI customization that would cover the whole authoring-reviewing-publishing workflow and guarantee archiving options that are as solid for journal publications as what we now have for primary sources published in TEI.

Parliamentary proceedings are a rich source of data that can be used by scholars in various humanities and social sciences disciplines. Unlike the sources of most other language corpora, parliamentary proceedings are not subject to copyright or personal privacy protections, and are typically available online, thus making them ideal for compilation into corpora and for open distribution. For these reasons many countries have already produced corpora of parliamentary proceedings, but each typically in their own encoding, limiting their comparability and utilization in a multilingual setting. In this paper we propose an encoding schema which could serve as an interchange format for parliamentary corpora compiled for the purposes of scholarly investigations. The schema, called Parla-CLARIN, was developed within the CLARIN research infrastructure, and is written as a TEI ODD which includes a TEI customization and prose guidelines with examples of use. We discuss the coverage and choices made in designing the recommendations, and give an overview of the guidelines. We also discuss two other standard schemas for encoding parliamentary data, Akoma Ntoso and RDF, and their relation to Parla-CLARIN. We conclude by presenting corpora already encoded in Parla-CLARIN and discussing further work, especially the provision of a set of example documents and of transformation scripts that would make the proposed encoding more usable.

Parliamentary data, especially parliamentary discourse, is of interest to researchers from various fields in the humanities and social sciences. The growing number of machine-readable and annotated parliamentary text corpora opens up this field for computer-based quantitative analysis. In this paper I aim to give an overview of how parliamentary interruptions are recorded in official parliamentary records and how they are modeled and encoded in currently available machine-readable parliamentary corpora. Furthermore, I will discuss whether these encodings are suitable for computer-based quantitative analysis of parliamentary interruptions. I will suggest detailed encodings of parliamentary interruptions in TEI as an extension to the Parla-CLARIN recommendations, to enable the extraction of parliamentary interruptions and to facilitate computerized quantitative analysis based on these encodings. As an example, I will use the encoding of interruptions in the Austrian Parliamentary Records.

Over the past decades, the question of what text really is has been addressed by a large number of conferences, workshops, articles, and blog posts. If there is one thing that, taken together, those contributions illustrate, it is that our understanding of text is—and has been—constantly in flux and open to many interpretations. Still, there is often a gap between how an editor conceptualizes a source text and how this text is encoded and stored on a computer: using TEI XML, editors are compelled to model their text as a single tree (a hierarchy), whether this structure corresponds with their intellectual understanding or not. Textual features that do not fit naturally into the XML data model require additional layers of code, which hinders processing, querying, and interchange. The Text-As-Graph (TAG) data model and the associated syntax TAGML are developed to express and store textual information as a network. To this end, TAG implements a hypergraph model. In the present contribution, we illustrate the benefits of TAG’s hypergraph for the modeling of features like nonlinearity, discontinuity, and overlap. In contrast to a tree model, a hypergraph accommodates these nonhierarchical structures naturally. By making them part of the data model and the syntax, a TAGML processor can process the features without having to resort to workarounds or schema-aware tools. This lowers the difficulty of working with digital editions and facilitates querying and interchange. 1

Textual and paratextual elements that serve to establish the authenticity of documents abound and carry meaning that is important—often central—to the meaning of the document as received, but are currently only lightly modeled in TEI. This paper will discuss issues in the modeling of authenticating features across time periods and regional boundaries, from the existing element to medieval European chirographs to Japanese jitsu-in. Here, I will make the case for the applicability of authenticating elements, introduce a preliminary working vocabulary of methods of authenticating elements, and demonstrate how they can be modeled in TEI.

The thirteenth-century Latin corpus of the Oxford gloss has challenging features. A digital scholarly edition of this corpus necessitates innovative solutions that on the one hand account for the complex structure and content of the text and its manuscript transmission, and on the other hand convey these data comprehensibly to the reader. There are still few user-friendly tools which allow scholars to encode a digital critical edition easily, particularly its critical apparatus, in TEI XML. In this article, I document my approach to editing a digital corpus of philosophical glosses, and explain the tools I am using and customizing to make available to a larger public of digital scholarly editors, especially in the field of medieval studies.

CORLI is a consortium of Huma-Num, the French national infrastructure dedicated to the technical support and promotion of digital humanities. The goal of CORLI is to promote and provide tools and information for good and efficient research practices in corpus linguistics, especially on spoken language corpora. Because of the time required to collect and transcribe spoken language resources, their number is limited and thus corpora need to be interoperable and reusable in order to improve research on themes such as phonology, prosody, interaction, syntax, and textometry. To help researchers reach this goal, CORLI has designed a pair of tools: TEICORPO to assist in the conversion and use of spoken language corpora, and TEIMETA for metadata purposes. TEICORPO is based on the principle of an underlying common format, namely TEI XML as described in its specification for spoken language use (ISO 2016). This tool enables the conversion of transcriptions created with alignment software such as CLAN, Transcriber, Praat, or ELAN as well as common file formats (CSV, XLSX, TXT, or DOCX) and the TEI format, which plays the role of a lossless pivot format. Backward conversion is possible in many cases, with limitations inherent in the destination target format. TEICORPO can run the Treetagger part-of-speech tagger and the Stanford CoreNLP tools on TEI files and can export the resulting files to textometric tools such as TXM, Le Trameur, or Iramuteq, making it suitable for spoken language corpora editing as well as for various research purposes.

Although the ODD (One Document Does it all) language is normally used to create TEI customizations or extensions, it is also a highly effective tool for editors working in other XML markup languages. This paper will discuss the use of ODD to define a highly constrained schema for HTML5 that will enforce stylistic rules and encoding practices, define custom attributes and value lists, and enable easier editing and validation of project content in the Oxygen XML Editor environment. I will provide a brief history of the project, whose first incarnation, created with the Dreamweaver HTML editor, was somewhat chaotically coded, and show how the implementation of an ODD-based schema provides huge advantages for authors, editors, and encoders, as well as substantially simplifying the code itself.

As a student of intellectual, religious, and cultural developments in areas of the Chinese cultural sphere, my initial motivation for engaging with digital texts thirty years ago was to open up the new possibilities that the digital medium offered to researchers, without losing any of the affordances of a traditional printed edition. This requirement includes use of texts for reading, translating, annotating, quoting, and publishing, thus integrating with the whole of the scholarly workflow. At that time theories of electronic texts started to appear and the Text Encoding Initiative had already begun to create a common text model and interchange specification, based mainly on European languages. For East Asian texts, things were much more complicated because of different and quickly evolving character encoding standards, different textual traditions and approaches to text editing, as well as different institutional embedding. In this paper, I will look back at these developments, first to recount some of the history, albeit from a strictly personal perspective, but also to take stock of the situation and consider where we are now, how we got there, and what remains to be done to realize the dream of the universal digital text, easily shared and annotated, but still tractable, verifiable, and authoritative.

“Diachronic Markup and Presentation Practices for Text Editions in Digital Environments,” a 2014–15 transatlantic collaboration funded jointly by DFG and NEH, provided an occasion to test TEI’s relatively new provisions for encoding temporality. My experiences in attempting to apply these provisions to Walt Whitman manuscripts led me to conclude that chapter 11 of the TEI Guidelines should be significantly revised and that the basic dichotomy it introduces between and deserves renewed scrutiny. Some of the problems in the chapter can be traced to the way the Guidelines have evolved over time through a series of choices motivated by expediency. The Whitman Archive has, since its first foray into TEI markup in 2000, been anxious to find a way to leverage its potential to encode the temporal characteristics and relationships among various manuscript and print instances. The customization we created, however, has shown itself inadequate to describe and make processable important genetic information. Unfortunately, TEI also continues to provide inadequate guidance in the area of encoding genetic relationships, both between documents and within them. My experiments during the Diachronic Markup project included using to encode the sequence in which the text of a single document was inscribed and show that, although the Guidelines need to be developed with specific advice and examples, existing elements and attributes can be used to posit claims about the “way the page was filled,” thereby enabling useful processing and display.
